Australian Soldier Dies Five Others Injured During Training Exercise
The incident took place Monday at the Mount Bundey Training Area, located southeast of Darwin, during an army exercise. The Defence Department did not provide details about what caused the incident or disclose the current conditions of the injured personnel.
The soldier who died was identified by local reports as Cpl. Brendan Hannam. The incident was reportedly connected to a military vehicle rollover at the training facility.
Emergency services were notified Monday afternoon, with the five injured soldiers subsequently taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for medical treatment.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased soldier while wishing the injured personnel a quick recovery.
“There are no safe or easy days for those who serve in our country’s name,” Albanese said in a statement.
The prime minister said the incident underscored the dangers faced by members of the armed forces as well as the risks experienced by their families while military personnel carry out their duties.
The Mount Bundey Training Area is located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Darwin and is used by the Australian Army and allied military forces for training activities, including live-fire exercises.
The latest incident is not the first fatal accident at the facility. An Australian soldier was killed there in 2017 during a live-fire training exercise.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding Monday’s incident, including the type of military vehicle involved or what led to the accident.
