Altman Says AI Benefits Require Accepting Some Risks

(MENAFN) OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says society may need to tolerate certain harmful effects of artificial intelligence in order to gain the broader benefits of the technology, highlighting a different approach to AI safety than that advocated by rival Anthropic.

“We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency,” Altman said in an interview published Sunday.

His remarks come as pressure grows for the AI industry to slow the development of increasingly advanced systems following several security incidents involving powerful models.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently urged AI developers to intentionally reduce the pace of progress in model capabilities, arguing that additional time is needed for developers and independent evaluators to address emerging safety concerns.

“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain,” Amodei wrote in a Sept. 12 essay.

Altman had previously expressed support for part of Amodei’s proposal, saying: “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier.”
