Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Reports Damage to Two Facilities After Attack

(MENAFN) Two facilities at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) were damaged during an overnight attack, according to Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom.

Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said the affected sites include a laboratory building situated around 200 meters (656 feet) from the plant’s fourth and fifth reactors, as well as a facility used to process radioactive waste.

“The roofs were damaged in both cases, but there is no threat to nuclear safety,” Likhachev said, according to reports.

Despite the reported attack, plant personnel have continued working to keep the facility’s primary equipment in a safe condition, he said.

Likhachev added that Rosatom had notified the International Atomic Energy Agency about the repairs required at the site and requested a temporary ceasefire to enable repair teams to carry out the necessary work safely.

“In normal circumstances, transformer repair is a routine task; today, however, it is an operation that entails a direct risk to the lives of our repair crews. We have no right to put our people at risk,” he said, adding that discussions were underway over the terms of a temporary localized truce around the plant.
