Kremlin Seeks Evidence Before Addressing US Espionage Allegations

(MENAFN) The Kremlin said Wednesday that Moscow sees no reason to respond to US accusations that several Russian nationals have been working with Russia’s intelligence services unless Washington provides evidence supporting the claims.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a briefing in Moscow that US authorities had yet to present material substantiating the espionage allegations.

“Until we have heard and seen any convincing evidence and arguments based on something tangible, we do not consider it necessary to comment on these reports,” he told reporters when asked about remarks made by US Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Blanche said Tuesday that several Russian nationals had been charged in the Southern District of New York over allegations that they had worked for Russia’s intelligence community since 2024.

Peskov also addressed Japan’s interest in restoring visa-free travel arrangements for its citizens visiting the Kuril Islands. He indicated that Moscow does not currently expect a reciprocal relaxation of restrictions, citing what he described as Tokyo’s unfriendly approach toward Russia.

“Of course, it was not Russia that advocated curtailing bilateral relations,” Peskov said. “Japan has taken an extremely unfriendly position toward our country and joined all the sanctions. It is on the list of unfriendly countries, so for now, it is hardly possible to hope for any mutual easing.”

The Kremlin's comments come amid continued tensions between Moscow and Western countries, as well as strained relations between Russia and Japan over sanctions and bilateral restrictions.
