Germany’s Wholesale Prices Surge to Highest Level Since 2023
The increase accelerated from 5.3% in July and 4.9% in June, according to Germany’s Federal Statistical Office. The August reading marked the strongest annual rise since wholesale prices climbed 9.5% in February 2023.
Mineral oil products were the main driver of the increase, with prices jumping 36.1% compared with August 2025. Significant increases were also recorded for non-ferrous ores, metals and semi-finished metal products, which became 27.4% more expensive over the same period.
Wholesale prices for chemical products increased 13.6% year-on-year, while computers and peripheral equipment recorded an 11.1% rise. The broader acceleration was largely linked to higher costs for energy and raw materials amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Not all categories experienced increases. Wholesale prices for live animals fell 18.3% compared with a year earlier. Prices for milk, dairy products, eggs and edible fats declined by 10.3%, while meat and meat products became 6.7% cheaper.
On a monthly basis, German wholesale prices increased by 0.9% in August, indicating that price pressures continued to build even after the substantial annual acceleration.
