Australia Online Safety Chief Faces Threats After Social Media Ban Rollout
The measures, which restrict children’s access to social media until the age of 16, prompted significant public debate and criticism after their announcement.
In the 24 hours following comments by Elon Musk—who described her as a “censorship commissar”—Inman Grant said she was targeted with approximately 75,000 social media posts, many of which were described as abusive or containing credible death threats.
Speaking at a gender equality forum alongside former Prime Minister Julia Gillard, she said the harassment escalated beyond herself to include her family, involving incidents of doxxing and manipulated images.
“My issue is when they dox my children and my family members ... it makes you sit back and go, am I putting my family and my kids in danger, and how do I protect them?” she said.
She expressed concern about the broader implications for public officials, particularly women in regulatory roles, noting that online abuse increasingly mirrors the risks faced by elected politicians.
Inman Grant also warned that while political leaders often receive formal security protection, regulators do not typically have equivalent safeguards, despite facing similar threats in the digital space.
