Australia Inflation Surges to Highest in Over Two Years

(MENAFN) Australia's inflation rate has soared to its highest point in more than two years, driven by record fuel prices sparked by the ongoing Middle East conflict, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) confirmed Wednesday.

Official ABS data revealed that the consumer price index climbed 4.6 percent in the year to March — a sharp acceleration from the 3.7 percent recorded in February and the steepest annual headline inflation reading since September 2023. The figure came in below earlier market expectations, with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reporting Wednesday morning that economists had forecast CPI growth reaching 4.8 percent for the month.

Underlying inflation, as measured by the annual trimmed mean, held firm at 3.3 percent for the fourth straight month — signaling that core price pressures, while persistent, have yet to broaden significantly beyond the energy shock.

Automotive fuel emerged as the dominant inflationary force in March, with prices surging 32.8 percent from February alone. Regular unleaded fuel leapt 33 percent on average, while diesel prices rocketed 41 percent over the same period. ABS head of prices statistics Sue-Ellen Luke described the magnitude of the move in stark terms, noting it was the largest monthly increase in fuel prices since tracking commenced in 2017 and that the figures directly reflect the "impact of the conflict in the Middle East."

The political pressure is mounting accordingly. Treasurer Jim Chalmers, addressing an industry forum for economists on March 19, warned that there was a "very real" prospect of Australia's inflation breaching the 5 percent mark in 2026, attributing the risk squarely to the oil supply disruptions caused by the regional conflict.

Beyond energy, housing affordability continued to deteriorate. The ABS noted that housing costs were 6.5 percent higher in March than a year prior, while electricity prices surged 25.4 percent following the expiry of government rebate programs — adding further strain to household budgets already battered by the fuel price shock.
