Australia Links Hormuz Restoration Push to Permanent Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles declared Tuesday that Canberra has a major stake in restoring free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, as escalating disruptions to global energy supply chains raise alarms worldwide.

"We're deeply invested in having an open Strait of Hormuz and the global fuel supply chain return to normality," Marles told media.

The minister confirmed Australia is actively coordinating with allied partners on potential contributions to strait-related efforts, while stressing that any commitment hinges on lasting peace — not a temporary pause in hostilities.

"We really need to see what plays out throughout the remainder of the ceasefire and as to what the circumstances are in the Strait of Hormuz, which would allow some effort to begin," Marles said.

Canberra is expected to attend a UK-France-hosted summit later this week, where allied nations will convene to map out a coordinated strategy for safeguarding commercial shipping through the strategically vital waterway.

At the heart of the crisis lies Iran's near-total chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz — the passage through which roughly 20% of global oil supplies transit — a blockade imposed since the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran commenced on Feb. 28.

Diplomatic efforts collapsed after weekend negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, despite a Pakistani-brokered two-week ceasefire, prompting Washington to launch a naval blockade of Iranian ports in retaliation.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the blockade would be enforced without exception against all vessels entering or exiting Iranian ports across both the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
