Erdogan, Iranian Counterpart Discuss Missile Interception
During the call, Erdogan emphasized to Pezeshkian that the breach of Türkiye's airspace "cannot be excused for any reason whatsoever" and affirmed that “Türkiye will continue to take all necessary measures against this," according to a statement from Türkiye's Communications Directorate.
The discussion, initiated at Pezeshkian's request, followed an announcement by the Turkish National Defense Ministry on Monday that a ballistic missile launched from Iran into Turkish airspace had been neutralized by NATO air and missile defense systems stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The ministry reported that last Wednesday, another ballistic projectile fired from Iran toward Turkish airspace—after passing over Syria and Iraq—was similarly intercepted and destroyed by NATO defense units in the same region.
Erdogan also conveyed to his Iranian counterpart that Türkiye is "negatively affected" by conflicts in which it is not directly involved.
Moreover, Ankara does not condone the "unlawful interventions" targeting Iran or Iran's attacks on other countries in the region. Erdogan stressed that striking allied nations "is not in anyone's interest” and insisted that “these actions must end."
