China Opens Annual “Two Sessions” Political Meetings in Beijing
Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening of the fourth session of the 14th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), alongside other senior officials. The CPPCC brings together 2,172 members representing 34 participating groups. CPPCC Chairman Wang Huning addressed attendees during the opening session.
The advisory session precedes the opening of the National People’s Congress on Thursday, which comprises 2,878 deputies. These parallel annual meetings, held since 1978, are commonly referred to as the “Two Sessions” or Lianghui.
Premier Li Qiang is expected to present the government work report as head of the State Council and announce key economic targets. Beijing is also set to unveil its 15th Five-Year Plan, outlining development priorities for 2026–2030.
The political gatherings take place amid escalating military tensions in the Middle East. Since February 28, US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and 786 others, including schoolgirls. Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting US-linked facilities in Gulf countries, causing multiple fatalities. Six US service members have reportedly been killed, with many others injured.
