Trump Considers Possibility of Attacking Iranian Leader

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering military action targeting Iran’s political and military leaders to attempt regime change, according to the Wall Street Journal. Officials say no final decision has been made.

Trump has received briefings on options that could include a weeks-long air campaign aimed at “killing scores” of Iranian leaders, with additional targets focused on nuclear and missile infrastructure. CBS News reported that the US military could be ready to strike as soon as Saturday, though the timeline may extend beyond the weekend.

The discussions come as the US has deployed two aircraft carrier strike groups and additional bombers to the Middle East, marking the largest military buildup in the region since the 2003 Iraq invasion.

While Trump’s advisers are weighing military options, the president has also expressed a preference for using diplomatic pressure to compel Iran to dismantle its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Iran has rejected such demands, reaffirming its “inherent, non-negotiable, and legally binding” right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes.

Omani-mediated talks in Geneva on Tuesday were described as positive but did not yield breakthroughs.

In response, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned the US against striking Iran’s nuclear sites, describing such actions as “playing with fire” that could trigger a nuclear disaster. Lavrov emphasized Russia’s support for Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear enrichment and blamed tensions on the US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal during Trump’s first term.

The US previously struck Iranian nuclear sites during the 12-day Israel-Iran air war in June 2025, but Iran has stated these attacks will not deter its nuclear ambitions.
