Malaysia Denounces Israel’s Somaliland Recognition
“Such actions violate international law and humanitarian principles, and would only perpetuate injustice rather than contribute to peace,” Anwar said during a press briefing, as reported by media.
The Malaysian leader described any attempt to use Somaliland as a destination for displaced Palestinians as “totally and wholly unacceptable.”
His remarks followed a statement by the Palestinian group Hamas on Saturday rejecting Israeli plans to expel Palestinians from Gaza, including proposals involving Somaliland. The controversy erupted after Israel became the first country to formally recognize the breakaway Somali region as a sovereign state last Friday.
Anwar also referenced recent diplomatic discussions in Florida aimed at reviving the peace process, cautioning that renewed violence would bring an “intolerable cost” to civilians and further erode already fragile hopes for peace.
“Israel must be held accountable for its actions and obligations under international law,” he added.
The decision by Tel Aviv has triggered international backlash, with critics arguing it undermines regional stability and breaches global legal norms. Somalia swiftly reaffirmed its “absolute and non-negotiable commitment” to its sovereignty and territorial integrity in response.
Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has operated with de facto autonomy but remains unrecognized by the international community. Despite its own administrative and security structures, the region’s leadership has struggled to gain formal recognition.
The developments have drawn sharp criticism from multiple governments and organizations, including the United Nations, which reiterated its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity under existing Security Council resolutions
