Sudan Military Thwarts RSF Drone Attack on Merowe Airport, Dam

(MENAFN) Sudan's military claimed Thursday that it successfully thwarted a coordinated drone assault by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting critical infrastructure and military installations across the nation's north.

The 19th Infantry Division of the Sudanese army reported intercepting multiple unmanned suicide drones deployed by the RSF during Thursday morning operations. The offensive reportedly aimed to strike the division's command center, Merowe Airport, and the Merowe Dam—all located in Northern State.

Witnesses in the vicinity reported intense detonations near both the airport and dam facilities, according to Sudanese media, though the full scope of resulting damage remains unconfirmed at this time.

The RSF has not yet issued any formal response to the military's account of events.

Al-Rakoba News, citing on-the-ground sources, indicated the assault also encompassed the state capital Dongola and the urban center of Al-Dabba.

Strategic Stronghold Under Fire
Merowe functions as one of northern Sudan's most strategically vital zones, featuring an airport serving dual military and civilian operations alongside the Merowe Dam—among Sudan's most significant infrastructure installations.

Territorial Control Shifts
Following the RSF's capture of El-Fasher, capital of North Darfur State, armed clashes between the insurgent faction and government forces have expanded into previously unaffected regions, notably the central and southern Kordofan states.

The paramilitary group now controls all five of Sudan's Darfur region states, with the exception of isolated northern sectors of North Darfur remaining under army administration. Government forces retain dominion over the majority of Sudan's remaining 13 states spanning southern, northern, eastern, and central zones, including the capital Khartoum.

Conflict Toll Mounts
The protracted warfare between the Sudanese military and the RSF, initiated in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced approximately millions of civilians throughout the conflict zone.
