Italy Pledges Key Role in Middle East Reconstruction
"Italy's commitment in the Middle East will be important, we'll see what kind of commitment it will be: it could be training the Palestinian police, it could be making a strong contribution to the civil administration," Tajani told a news agency during the sidelines of the meeting.
He stressed that Italy intends to "certainly be constructive," highlighting the country’s plan to allocate €60 million ($69 million) for reconstruction efforts, noting that the first €5 million were already dispatched months ago.
Tajani added that it is crucial to ensure the truce in Gaza is reinforced and that all humanitarian aid and food supplies successfully reach the population.
He also mentioned that Italy’s envoy, who has visited Jordan, Ramallah, Israel, and Egypt, will travel to the United States to guarantee that Italy remains "a protagonist" in the reconstruction efforts and "in the phase that must be that of peace."
The Gaza ceasefire came into effect on Oct. 10, following a 20-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.
The initial stage of the ceasefire includes the release of Israeli hostages in return for Palestinian prisoners, along with plans for Gaza’s reconstruction and the establishment of a new governing framework without Hamas.
