US Senate Foreign Relations Committee backs lifting sanctions on Syria

(MENAFN) The top Republican and Democratic figures on the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee expressed backing for removing sanctions on Syria after holding private talks with President Ahmed al-Sharaa, according to reports.

Committee Chairman Jim Risch and Ranking Member Jeanne Shaheen said they "reaffirmed our support for a stable, representative and prosperous Syria, bolstered by the repeal of Assad-era Caesar Act sanctions, safety for all Syrian communities and constructive engagement with its neighbors, including Israel" during their meeting.

"Under President al-Sharaa’s leadership, the Syrian government is becoming a U.S. partner and we’re ready to support this strengthened relationship. As Congress moves forward to pass the bipartisan legislation that would fully repeal Caesar sanctions against Syria, the world is watching how Syria treats its own people and its neighbors," they added in a statement.

They further noted, "If Syria continues on its current trajectory, we have no doubt policymakers and investors alike will have confidence about Syria’s future."

The remarks follow the Trump administration’s temporary suspension of Caesar Act sanctions for 180 days on Monday, a move aimed at partially easing restrictions. The suspension halts most sanctions except for certain dealings involving the governments of Russia and Iran, or transactions involving Russian- or Iranian-origin goods, technology, software, funds, financing, or services, according to advisory guidelines.

While the sanctions were initially paused in May for six months, full removal requires Congressional approval. The 2019 Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act has been a cornerstone of US policy aimed at pressuring the regime of President Bashar al-Assad by restricting international investments and economic interactions with the Syrian government and its affiliates. The law is named after an anonymous Syrian whistleblower, known as Caesar, who exposed severe human rights violations under Assad’s rule.
