Members of M23 rebel group have surrendered amid conflict in DRC
(MENAFN) Two officers and 36 fighters from the M23 rebel group have surrendered amid ongoing clashes in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the military confirmed Monday.
Maj. Dieudonne Kasereka, communications officer for the 34th Military Region, said the deserters—including a major, a captain, and other fighters—handed over their weapons in Rutshuru, Masisi, and Walikale in North Kivu, as well as Kalehe in South Kivu.
Most of those who surrendered were forcibly conscripted civilians or former government soldiers and police officers kidnapped in Goma and Bukavu, Kasereka added. Their testimonies highlighted inhumane treatment and abuses within the rebel ranks.
Johnny Makala, one of the deserters, told local media he fled “to save his life.” Brig. Gen. Constantin Muyuwa urged remaining M23 members to follow suit.
Last week, Congo and M23 signed an agreement in Doha to establish a ceasefire monitoring mechanism, building on a July Declaration of Principles deal. Despite this, clashes continue, with both sides accusing each other of violations. The UN and Kinshasa also accuse neighboring Rwanda of supporting M23, a claim Kigali denies.
