Germany Endorses US-Led Gaza Ceasefire Proposal
The appeal came with a sense of urgency, urging all sides to act decisively.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, speaking during a press briefing in Warsaw, urged those involved to "demonstrate the courage to take the final, decisive step."
He mentioned that Berlin has also been actively engaged in the diplomatic initiatives that have led to this pivotal stage.
"We are grateful to the US president for his strong commitment now," Wadephul remarked, emphasizing the importance of embracing the current momentum.
He stressed that "now is the time to open the door to a long-term peace," underlining that such peace can only be established through a "negotiated two-state solution."
The senior German official reiterated his appeal for Hamas to release all Israeli captives in order to bring an end to the ongoing destruction.
He also restated Germany’s consistent stance that Hamas must relinquish its arms and not be permitted to hold any political authority in Gaza's governance. Wadephul noted that Gaza should be part of a broader, future Palestinian state.
