Germany's Trade Surplus with US Hits Five-Year Low
(MENAFN) Germany recorded a trade surplus of €34.6 billion ($40.6 billion) with the United States from January to July, the smallest figure in five years, as revealed by the national statistics agency Destatis on Friday.
The surplus in “Made in Germany” goods with the US dropped by 15.1% year-on-year during the first seven months, largely due to a reduction in exports to the US and an increase in imports, according to the report.
German shipments to the US decreased by 5.3% to $105.6 billion in the January–July period, while purchases from the US edged up 2.2% to $65 billion.
Destatis also reported that Germany’s international trade surplus with China rose to $55.9 billion, marking a 54.1% annual increase, while exports to Türkiye climbed 9.4% to $20.8 billion and imports surged 10.8% to $17.9 billion in the same period.
Germany achieved a record trade surplus of roughly $82.2 billion with the US last year — a figure that drew criticism from US President Donald Trump.
In 2024, German exports to the US amounted to $189.3 billion, a 2.2% gain, while imports from the US increased 7% to $107.2 billion.
Data indicated that Germany posted its largest foreign trade surplus with the US since 2017.
Analysts suggest that German exports are facing challenges due to assertive industrial and commercial policies by both China and the US aimed at reducing reliance on foreign trade partners.
