Appeals Court Orders Trump to Pay USD83.3 Million
The judgment confirmed a civil jury’s decision that Trump repeatedly undermined Carroll’s credibility online through a campaign of defamation.
The three-judge panel from the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed Trump’s attempt to overturn the multi-million dollar ruling, declaring that the "jury's damages awards are fair and reasonable."
"The record in this case supports the district court's determination that 'the degree of reprehensibility' of Mr. Trump's conduct was remarkably high, perhaps unprecedented," the judges wrote in their opinion.
"Carroll was subjected to ongoing and prolific harassment as a result of these statements, including a multitude of death threats and other threats of physical injury."
Trump’s attorneys contended that the $65 million punitive damages were disproportionately large and demanded a new trial, even as the US Supreme Court expanded presidential immunity protections.
Nevertheless, the appeals court dismissed those claims, emphasizing that Trump’s "extraordinary and unprecedented" false accusations against Carroll, now 81, justified the substantial financial penalty.
"Given the unique and egregious facts of this case, we conclude that the punitive damages award did not exceed the bounds of reasonableness," the judges stated.
