Tsunami trikes Russia’s Kuril Islands
Governor Valery Limarenko of the Sakhalin Region stated that residents of the coastal town, home to around 2,500 people, were relocated to higher ground as a safety measure. Emergency responders remain on high alert, with all necessary precautions in place to protect the public and restore normalcy.
Tsunami sirens were heard as residents fled to elevated areas. Footage released by officials shows water reaching the shoreline and flooding parts of Severo-Kurilsk. While there have been no reports of injuries or significant destruction, the Alaid fish processing plant was submerged, and its workers were swiftly evacuated.
Drone videos of the inundated areas were shared by the Russian Geophysical Service. A regional tsunami warning was issued across the Kuril Islands, and authorities are closely monitoring coastal zones while continuing precautionary evacuations. Emergency services remain fully mobilized.
