Trump states Congress’s agreement to end government shutdown

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump indicated on Sunday that Congress is nearing a deal to end the 40-day federal government shutdown, describing the situation as “very close” to resolution.

Reports suggest lawmakers have reached a bipartisan agreement to fund the government through the end of January, with Senate Republicans agreeing to hold a vote on extending critical health care subsidies set to expire on January 1.
The Senate convened Sunday evening to vote on the short-term funding bill. If approved, the measure will advance to the House of Representatives before reaching the White House for Trump’s signature, potentially reopening federal agencies.

Some moderate Democrats, including Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan, and Angus King, have expressed support for reopening the government under the proposed framework. Democrats reportedly softened their stance on guaranteed Affordable Care Act subsidy extensions, a major sticking point in earlier negotiations, to facilitate passage.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune confirmed the compromise and called for an emergency vote, though some issues remain unresolved. These include Democrats’ demands to reinstate federal workers dismissed during the shutdown, with at least eight Democratic votes required for the bill to meet the 60-vote threshold.

The deal, if approved, would mark a temporary end to the longest government shutdown in US history, which has furloughed hundreds of thousands of employees and disrupted key public services.
